Interdisciplinary Grants
in Climate and Energy Studies

The newly established Yale Climate & Energy Institute (YCEI) announces an annual competition for Interdisciplinary Grants for Yale faculty in climate and energy studies that promote collaborations between the natural sciences, engineering, medicine and social sciences.

The YCEI welcomes proposals from Yale faculty focused on innovative approaches as well as practical and implementable solutions to climate change and future energy needs that transcend traditional research boundaries with others at Yale. Proposals can also contain collaborations with individuals outside of Yale.  YCEI projects are intended to promote multidisciplinary research in addressing issues related to ancient/modern/future climates, ecological, health and socio-economic impacts, climate mitigation (e.g., carbon sequestration), alternative energy and design technologies, and both global and regional adaptation strategies.

YCEI Interdisciplinary Grants are awarded for two years and cover basic research expenses including, salary for postdoctoral researchers, student stipends, equipment, analyses, data purchasing, travel for PI or collaborators, etc. Grants cannot be used for faculty salary. Total budget should not exceed $100,000. There are no indirect costs associated with these grants. Collaborations within Yale University will be given the highest priority. The YCEI anticipates funding at least 5 new interdisciplinary grants per year.

Principal investigators for these grants are required to (a) provide one annual report that explains progress and outlines efforts to leverage YCEI grants for future funding (e.g., federal funding, industrial matching, etc.); (b) provide one lecture on results and findings for the YCEI monthly seminar series; and (c) submit to the YCEI Executive Committee a final report, which will be made publicly available through the YCEI website. Moreover, publications resulting from YCEI-funded research should acknowledge the Yale Climate & Energy Institute.

Submission of proposals will be done in two stages:

1. A two page pre-proposal stating project title and principal investigators (with contact information). The pre-proposal should give a project summary and state a plan for facilitating an interdisciplinary collaboration. Deadline for the two-page pre-proposal: May 15th, 2009. Decisions on pre-proposals will be announced by May 31st, 2009.

2. Investigators invited to submit a full proposal should provide a complete proposal (maximum 10-pages, single space, 12pt font, not including references and budget) by July 31st, 2009.

To participate, please submit preproposals to YCEI.Grants@yale.edu by May 15, 2009.
